Supporting Development While Maintaining Accountability
One of the more difficult leadership questions I encounter is this:
How do we balance supporting someone's development with holding them accountable?
Most leaders genuinely want people to succeed. They invest time, provide support, create opportunities and often go to considerable lengths to help colleagues grow.
Yet there comes a point where many leaders begin to wonder:
How much support is enough?
At what point does helping someone develop become protecting them from accountability?
And equally, when does accountability stop supporting growth and begin to feel punitive?
There is rarely a simple answer.
The challenge lies in recognising the difference between someone who needs more support and someone who is choosing not to engage with the support available.
For many leaders, the difficulty is not making the decision itself. It is living with the uncertainty that accompanies it.
Leadership often requires us to hold both compassion and accountability at the same time.
The two are not opposites. In many situations, they are inseparable.
